Africa Conflict Daily Brief - 6 February, 2026

Executive Summary

Security and political developments across Africa reflect a convergence of kinetic threats, counterterrorism operations, and expanding external partnerships. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, renewed drone attacks attributed to M23 underscore the group’s growing operational capabilities and the continued vulnerability of civilian infrastructure, even as Kinshasa moves to institutionalize strategic cooperation with the United States through critical minerals frameworks that elevate the country’s geopolitical relevance. In the Horn of Africa, Somalia remains a focal point of both internal security efforts and external alignment, marked by intensified counter-Al-Shabaab operations, reaffirmed Gulf support for state sovereignty, and deepening energy cooperation with Turkey. Across the Sahel, JNIM’s coordinated attacks in Mali and Burkina Faso highlight persistent insurgent momentum and sustained pressure on local security forces. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s engagement with Turkey signals a broader pattern of diversified partnerships combining security, economic, and diplomatic dimensions. Collectively, these developments point to a complex landscape where hard security challenges coexist with strategic competition over resources, influence, and long-term positioning.

This daily brief provides a concise, intelligence-driven overview of key political, security, energy, and economic developments shaping the regional and international landscape. It synthesizes verified reporting and strategic signals to highlight emerging trends, policy shifts, and risk indicators relevant to decision-makers, analysts, and stakeholders.
